Digital Creativity: Event Report

6th May 2010
South Camden CLC

"Very enjoyable, relevant, well-planned and presented"

"I found out a lot more information than I had hoped for"

"Keep doing more events like this please"

Overview

Will Pickford and Sue Rimmer introducing the event

This event was organised jointly by RSC London and RSC Eastern. Running for the third successive year, the event was exciting, interesting, interractive and very hands-on. Hosted at South Camden CLC in a computer suite with computers running Windows 7 with touch screen monitors, presenters and delegates found the workshop a useful forum to share ideas, collaborate, create content and network. The agenda for the day allowed for interractive demos and various hands-on activities with opportunities for discussions, questions and answers.

Creating your own resources with etemplates

David Collins, AoC President

Tim Morgan, Barking & Dagenham College

Tim gave a good presentation and demo on how delegates could create content using eTemplates. eTemplates is the product of collaboration between tutors and the Content Workshop eLearning team in Barking and Dagenham College. As delegates found out, the eTemplates allowed users to create content in minutes rather than hours. The eTemplates are provided freely for educational use. The eTemplates and other resources from Tim can be freely downloaded from the RSC London Moodle site created to support this event. The Moodle site can be accessed via the link below:

iPhone/iTunesU development for education

Neil Powell & Marie Claire Isaaman, NUCA

Neil and Marie-Claire did a double-act that wowed everyone at the event. They presented and demoed innovative work by students using iPhone based applications. They showed the opportunities avaible to FE and HE institutions and individuals to become involved in mobile technologies. Delegates were able to see the pedagogy around the use of mobile technologies from Marie-Claire's presentation and the impact it has made is her role supporting adaptable curriculum, innovation in digitally focussed subject areas. The presentation also showed a digital novel based on the life of Johnny Cash. Marie-Claire also spoke about augumented reality using the iPhone by which iPhone users could find their location, with layers of information about their location. The presentation also touched on Web 2.0, 3.0, The Cloud, Mashups, Semantic Web, Web of things, etc

The presentation and resources from this session is availble on the Moodle site:

Springboard TV

Clare Killen, LSN

Ben Jackson, The College of West Anglia

Supported with funding via Becta, Springboard TV is an internet based TV station operated from within the Media department of The College of West Anglia. The project aimed, amongst other things, to generate a new approach to curriculum delivery. Using the web as a vehicle, the department now showcases student’s work online, thus providing them with an online portfolio, which also acts to aid them in their progression. Ben gave a demo of the TV station playing some clips along the way. Clearly, delegates saw that the station was an effective online repository of students' work, the project had helped to broaden curriculum delivery and enhanced resourcing, and had stimulated a creative environment for teaching and learning. Ben's presentation and other resources are available in the Moodle site, see link below:

Creating learning units with the Xerte Online Toolkit

Phil George, Kingston College

Phil facilitated a highly engaging and interractive workshop to show delegates how they could create learning content including mixed media links and test their knowledge using the Xerte online toolkits. In preparation for the workshop, Phil created accounts for the delegates to use in the Kingston College Xerte server and during the workshop delegates were able to login to the server and work on creating a resource of their choice. Phil also showed several web applications that delegates could use to create various media rich content, a good example that Phil showed is the web-based video maker called xtra normal. Phil also pointed delegates to sources where they could find out more about Xerte like the Molenet Xerte site. More information and resources from Phil's session can be found in the Moodle site, link below:

Summary / Final thoughts:

Running for the third successive year, the Digital Creativity event did not lack the enthusiasm, excitement and interest for which is has been known over the years. Presenters and delegates alike were fully engaged and partcipated in hands-on activities and discussions and were able to create resources they could take away using removable media.

RSCs London and Eastern feel that this event is much needed and would continue to run them for the foreseeable future. Delegates' feedback, very positive, is evidence that this event is meeting a need that content or resource creators have, to use more creative ways, know the latest tools and technolgies that are available to them, and to meet in a forum to collaborate and share ideas.
